UNESCO heritage site (tentative list): The historic town of Korčula
North west of Mljet and more than twice the size—with an area of 279 square kilometres-- Korčula is another long, narrow, and densely forested island. Sometimes called “little Dubrovnik” as it is encircled by high walls, the streets of the old town are arranged in a “herringbone pattern” so that while air can circulate, there is protection from strong winds. Its cultural uniqueness is such that it is currently on the tentative list for UNESCO heritage status.
The island boasts a choice of small, peaceful coves and sandy beaches on the south. The northern coastline is less sloping and more pebbly. The population of Korčula is around 15,500, with many living in the main town and the rest scattered across the island’s small villages. There is several olive groves and vineyards, so it isn’t surprising that the island has a reputation for excellent food and wine, but thankfully for us without the crowds of Croatia’s more accessible northerly islands.
Korčula has no airport on the island, so you will have to use either Split or Dubrovnik.
Korcula is one of the greenest and most peaceful islands for yacht charter itinerary.
